Erectile Dysfunction Treatment
When you think of men’s health issues, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, or prostatitis. However, there is another common men’s health issue that you may try hard to ignore, in hopes that it will one day go away. That issue is erectile dysfunction. Although erectile dysfunction is a common health issue, affecting 30 million men in the United States according to the Cleveland Clinic, many men will find it difficult to discuss or seek treatment for. Erectile dysfunction is more common in older men, specifically over the age of 75, but you should not feel bad or embarrassed to speak to your doctor about ED treatment at a younger age.

What is erectile dysfunction?
Put simply, having an erectile dysfunction means not being able to keep an erection firm enough for sex. However, having problems occasionally with getting and keeping an erection isn’t necessarily a sign of an erectile dysfunction. Poor erections can be caused by any number of things including your current stress levels, injuries to nerves, and depression, not all of which will result in consistent poor sexual performance or inability to have sex. However, if this issue persists for weeks or months on end, and you are continually unable to get or sustain an erection, you most likely have erectile dysfunction.
The penis is an organ, it has a specific purpose like any other organ in your body, and that purpose is to make sexual intercourse possible; it plays no role in urination or ejaculation and should only become erect when the time is right. When not erect, the penis has minimal need for blood and oxygen, and has very little metabolic needs as well. However, just because the penis only serves one purpose does not mean that its well-being isn’t essential for your overall health. Since the majority of ED cases are simply the result of other health issues, by seeking a cure, you’ll not only be improving your sexual health, but you’ll be improving your overall health and preventing other health issues that could stem from the same thing.
When a man gets aroused, nerves transmit impulses from the brain to arteries within the penis. These signals will cause the arteries to dilate and increase blood flow throughout the penis. Chemicals are released that cause the muscle layer in the arterial wall to relax and increase blood flow rate. In a healthy penis, the corpora will fill with blood and will become stiff enough for intercourse. When this process doesn’t work correctly it is known as an erectile dysfunction and can vary from being a minimal to severe problem.

Causes of erectile dysfunction
Although there are many things that can contribute to the severity of erectile dysfunction, the reduced firmness in the penis usually stems from issues within the arteries. As men get older, microplaque deposition (arteriosclerosis) starts to take its toll on the body. Arteriosclerosis happens when blood vessels that carry oxygen and other nutrients to your body’s organs from your heart “harden” or become stiff, thus preventing your organs from receiving the blood they need to function properly.
In addition to changes in the arteries, there are a number of other factors that can contribute to erectile function such as:
- High cholesterol is a “silent but deadly” contributor to clogged arteries. If you’re concerned about high cholesterol, you should limit saturated fats in your diet found in foods such as butter, fatty meat, and full fat cheese, milk, and cream.
- Diabetes is a reality for around 30 million Americans, and although it’s incurable, should be taken into consideration when determining how to treat erectile dysfunction.
- Smoking is widely known to be a large contributor to poor blood circulation by damaging your heart's function and the structure of blood cells. The good news is, it’s entirely preventable.
- Sleep apnea is a condition that involves breathing interruptions while sleeping. It has proven to lead to higher blood pressure and increased risk for heart attacks and strokes.
- Prostate enlargement occurs in older men and is known to contribute to erectile dysfunction.
These are just a few of the many factors that can contribute to the severity of erectile dysfunction. If you have erectile dysfunction, a doctor will often look at these, and other factors in order to determine what is causing reduced blood flow to the penis. Typically, arteriosclerosis is caused by a number of factors that are developed throughout a man’s life and is rarely caused by just one, so it’s important to have a plan that is custom fit for your health and lifestyle.
If you suspect that you may have erectile dysfunction, you should contact a board-certified medical specialist at Charleston Men’s Clinic today. We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ED. We offer free consultations that are thorough and will have you leaving our office with a full understanding of what factors are causing you erectile dysfunction and what your options are for treating it.

Treatment for erectile dysfunction
Treatment for erectile dysfunction
If you’ve determined that you’re experiencing mild, moderate, or severe erectile dysfunction, your first step should be to contact a men’s health specialist. Although you can go to your regular doctor, visiting a medical clinic that is focused specifically on men’s health issues is your best bet for receiving a thorough examination and full range of treatment for the issue you’re having. Your doctor will likely direct you to a men’s health specialist anyways. Charleston Men’s Clinic is your Top Rated Local® Men’s Clinic in Charleston, South Carolina.
Oral ED Medication
Oral contraception is one of the most common ways to treat erectile dysfunction. The oral medications used to treat erectile dysfunction are called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors or PDEI’s. The most common of these medications are Viagra® (sildenafil), Cialis® (tadalafil) and Levitra® (vardenafil).
How they work
PDEI medication does not give you an erection, but instead allows for more blood flow to the penis, making it easier to get and sustain an erection. With sexual stimulation, a signal is sent to the arteries in the penis. Nitric oxide is released from the endothelial cells on the inside of the artery and enters the smooth muscle cells producing cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), a chemical that causes the blood vessel to dilate and relax muscle cells. As a result, more blood can flow to the penis, resulting in an erection.
Potential side effects of PDEI medication
Since PDEIs enter your blood stream, they will affect your whole body. Although this is generally a good thing, some patients may experience headaches, nasal congestion, muscle aches, or dizziness. In rare cases, it may result in priapism, or prolonged erection.
PDEI medication is available to you at your Top Rated Local® Charleston Men’s Clinic. We offer prescriptions for the three PDEIs listed above in stronger, under-the-tongue tablets that will make it into your bloodstream faster. Typically, you will want to take the pill an hour before having sex and avoid taking it on a full stomach.
Shockwave treatment for ED
The Charleston Men’s Clinic is proud to be the first GAINSWave™ in the Carolinas. This procedure is designed to be a more permanent solution to erectile dysfunction. Instead of having to resort to taking medication before sex or result to surgical procedures, this process is drug-free, surgery-free, pain-free, and side-effect free.
How it works
GAINSWave™ uses high-frequency acoustic waves to break down microplaque, increase the growth of new blood vessels and to open existing ones. As a result, you will experience stronger erections that last longer. You’ll also feel increased sensation and overall increased sexual performance.
The GAINSWave™ process involves the use of a low intensity, high frequency extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in order to heal and promote growth. Gently pulsating waves will be sent into the penis to break up microplaque and allows for a biological reaction that results in angiogenic growth. What this means is that it will help to repair blood vessels that are essential for maintaining an erection.
GAINSWave™ can be used to treat a disease called Peyronie’s Disease where fibrous scar tissue develops inside the penis, resulting in curved and sometimes painful erections. About 80 percent of patients with Peyronie’s Disease report having erectile dysfunction, because it can make sexual intercourse more difficult, less enjoyable, and generally lead to anxiety that can contribute to erectile dysfunction.
Below are some of the symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease:
- Scar tissue can often be felt under the skin as a hard band of tissue that may be painful or cause the penis to bend to either side.
- Erectile dysfunction can result from the scar tissue build up making erections painful and undesirable.
- Pain on one side of the penis is also a symptom of Peyronie’s Disease. This may either be while erect or during intercourse.
Although Peyronie’s Disease may improve in some patients, in others it may last a lifetime with little-to-no improvement. GAINSWave™ is an effective long-term solution to this disease and can help prevent erectile dysfunction if that becomes an issue for these patients.
GAINSWave™ has been around in Europe for 15 years and has been used to effectively treat Peyronie’s Disease and erectile dysfunction. However, until recently it hasn’t made it to the United States. Charleston Men’s Clinic is proud to be the first provider of this safe and drug-free procedure in the Carolinas.

A Priapus Shot or P-Shot is another effective ED treatment that is simple and relatively painless. It involves taking platelet rich plasma (PRP) taken from your own blood, activated, and injected into the penis in order to stimulate repair and growth in new blood vessels, nerves and tissue. There are no side effects of the P-Shot because it uses your own blood to heal and repair damage, and it is often used in conjunction with other treatments like GAINSWave™ and PDEI medication for the full effect.
