Treatment for erectile dysfunction
If you’ve determined that you’re experiencing mild, moderate, or severe erectile dysfunction, your first step should be to contact a men’s health specialist. Although you can go to your regular doctor, visiting a medical clinic that is focused specifically on men’s health issues is your best bet for receiving a thorough examination and full range of treatment for the issue you’re having. Your doctor will likely direct you to a men’s health specialist anyways. Charleston Men’s Clinic is your Top Rated Local® Men’s Clinic in Charleston, South Carolina.
Oral ED Medication
Oral contraception is one of the most common ways to treat erectile dysfunction. The oral medications used to treat erectile dysfunction are called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors or PDEI’s. The most common of these medications are Viagra® (sildenafil), Cialis® (tadalafil) and Levitra® (vardenafil).
How they work
PDEI medication does not give you an erection, but instead allows for more blood flow to the penis, making it easier to get and sustain an erection. With sexual stimulation, a signal is sent to the arteries in the penis. Nitric oxide is released from the endothelial cells on the inside of the artery and enters the smooth muscle cells producing cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate), a chemical that causes the blood vessel to dilate and relax muscle cells. As a result, more blood can flow to the penis, resulting in an erection.
Potential side effects of PDEI medication
Since PDEIs enter your blood stream, they will affect your whole body. Although this is generally a good thing, some patients may experience headaches, nasal congestion, muscle aches, or dizziness. In rare cases, it may result in priapism, or prolonged erection.
PDEI medication is available to you at your Top Rated Local® Charleston Men’s Clinic. We offer prescriptions for the three PDEIs listed above in stronger, under-the-tongue tablets that will make it into your bloodstream faster. Typically, you will want to take the pill an hour before having sex and avoid taking it on a full stomach.
Shockwave treatment for ED
The Charleston Men’s Clinic is proud to be the first GAINSWave™ in the Carolinas. This procedure is designed to be a more permanent solution to erectile dysfunction. Instead of having to resort to taking medication before sex or result to surgical procedures, this process is drug-free, surgery-free, pain-free, and side-effect free.
How it works
GAINSWave™ uses high-frequency acoustic waves to break down microplaque, increase the growth of new blood vessels and to open existing ones. As a result, you will experience stronger erections that last longer. You’ll also feel increased sensation and overall increased sexual performance.
The GAINSWave™ process involves the use of a low intensity, high frequency extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in order to heal and promote growth. Gently pulsating waves will be sent into the penis to break up microplaque and allows for a biological reaction that results in angiogenic growth. What this means is that it will help to repair blood vessels that are essential for maintaining an erection.
GAINSWave™ can be used to treat a disease called Peyronie’s Disease where fibrous scar tissue develops inside the penis, resulting in curved and sometimes painful erections. About 80 percent of patients with Peyronie’s Disease report having erectile dysfunction, because it can make sexual intercourse more difficult, less enjoyable, and generally lead to anxiety that can contribute to erectile dysfunction.
Below are some of the symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease:
- Scar tissue can often be felt under the skin as a hard band of tissue that may be painful or cause the penis to bend to either side.
- Erectile dysfunction can result from the scar tissue build up making erections painful and undesirable.
- Pain on one side of the penis is also a symptom of Peyronie’s Disease. This may either be while erect or during intercourse.
Although Peyronie’s Disease may improve in some patients, in others it may last a lifetime with little-to-no improvement. GAINSWave™ is an effective long-term solution to this disease and can help prevent erectile dysfunction if that becomes an issue for these patients.
GAINSWave™ has been around in Europe for 15 years and has been used to effectively treat Peyronie’s Disease and erectile dysfunction. However, until recently it hasn’t made it to the United States. Charleston Men’s Clinic is proud to be the first provider of this safe and drug-free procedure in the Carolinas.
