Peyronie’s Disease is a Painful Medical Condition

Hello, dear reader, and welcome back to our blog! Here at Charleston Men’s Clinic, we take great care to make sure that our patients feel comfortable when they visit our clinic. Men, especially when it involves issues related to sexual health, don’t seem to like discussing things that are bothering them. This is a bad thing because if a person never visits a doctor to have a medical issue looked at, it will almost always become worse over time. Sometimes, we need a little medical help in order to function at our best and, in today’s post, we are going to cover Peyronie’s disease, a disease that affects over 200,000 people a year. We hope that by the end of this blog you understand this disease a little better and understand why it is so important to see a doctor if you suffer from this medical condition. What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is the development of fibrous scar tissue inside of the penis which causes curved, painful erections. Even though penises come in all shapes and sizes and a curve in the penis is not something that normally is a cause for concern, Peyronie’s disease is something that needs to be treated as soon as it is identified. The causes of Peyronie’s disease are, at this time, not completely understood but it is believed to be a cause of repeated trauma to the penis. For example, the penis may become damaged during intercourse, athletic activity, or as a result of an accident. It should be noted that in most cases, men do not recall a serious trauma to the penis, meaning that this disease could simply be caused by repeated stress over the life of the patient. During the healing process after the injury, scar tissue typically forms in a disorganized manner which can lead to areas of the penis that have a lot of scar tissue spread around under the skin. Below, we have listed some of the symptoms that are associated with this disease.

  • Penis Bend: One of the most common symptoms of Peyronie’s disease is a significant curve or bend to the penis in a variety of directions depending upon where the scar tissue on the penis is located. This occurs because as blood fills the penis, the scar tissue keeps the normally spongy tissue contained within the penis from properly expanding. This can be very painful in some cases and may be enough to prevent a male suffering from this condition from being able to have sex.
  • Erection Issues: Believe it or not, if your body figures out that something is causing it pain, it will most often try to keep from repeating whatever action that caused the pain. This means that the longer Peyronie’s disease is left untreated, the more likely it is that a man will experience erectile dysfunction issues.
  • Shortening of the Penis: The more scar tissue that is allowed to form and the longer this scar tissue goes without being treated, the more likely it is that a man will look down one day only to notice that his penis is shorter than he is used to. This is a result of the scar tissue preventing the penis from fully extending, whether flaccid or erect and can be one of the most psychologically disheartening aspects of the entire disease.
  • Pain: The most noticeable symptom of Peyronie’s disease is pain. When scar tissue prevents an erection from extending as it should, it is normally a painful experience. Unfortunately, this pain is not only present during an erection but, in some cases, can be felt even when the penis is flaccid.

How is Peyronie’s Disease Treated?

Over the years, many medical treatments have been developed for Peyronie’s disease. Between oral medications and penile injections, physicians worked as well as hey could with the tools that they had to help people suffering from this disease. However, here at Charleston Men’s Clinic, we have taken a different approach to Peyronie’s disease treatment with our GAINSWave therapy. By using the power of acoustic waves, this therapy option is able to break up scar tissue that has developed along the penis, help rebuild blood vessels, and stimulate the release of the stem cells that help to rejuvenate the penis. This method eliminates the need for injections or medications and is a pain-free therapy that is sweeping across the United States. If you would like to learn more about the treatment options we have for Peyronie’s disease, please contact us today at Charleston Men’s Clinic.
